Lenore: Noogies

Artist/Author: Roman Dirge
Publisher: SLG (Slave Labor Graphics)
First Edition: July 1999
Format: Paperback

Lenore is a cute, innocent little... well, a little dead girl, created by artist and author Roman Dirge and published by SLG. She lives in a world populated by monsters, freaks and oddities, meeting everything from cuddly hamsters to beastly monsters to talking taxidermy. This book recants the first four issues of the popular original series. In this volume we see Lenore go babysitting (don't give a baby a bag of birdseed), she meets a living hairball, dresses up as little bunny Foo-foo, squeezes a hamster half to death, assists a doomed magician, and she even discovers the secret of the elusive muffin elf. We are also introduced to her ill-fated lover, a stitched up, button-eyed man named Mr. Gosh, who never quite gains Lenore's approval... but he does get stabbed a lot. The series is filled out with other original short strips by Dirge, including The Last Robot and The Boy with his Heart in a Box. Both heartwarming and moderately disturbing, Dirge's creation hits the mark for it's genre, skillfully combining little-girl cuteness and life beyond the grave with a very unique style all its own.
