LEGO Batman: The Videogame

LEGO Batman: The Videogame
Genre: Action-Adventure
Available On: Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PS3, Nintendo DS, PSP, PC
Publishers: DC Comics, Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, Traveller's Tales Games
Release Date: September 23, 2008
For 1 or 2 Players

This game is an exciting and imaginative romp into the world of LEGOs, Gotham style. The controls are easy to master, and the gameplay as far as controls are concerned leaves little to be desired. The game flows smoothly, and while fairly linear, it does include many hidden places and easter eggs to be discovered by the experienced or curious player. You can collect the hidden pieces that are scattered throughout the various missions to unlock extra characters, vehicles, gameplay altering cheats and a database of Bat-related information. You begin in the batcave, where the three 'episodes' of play are assigned to a bat-vehicle; choose your ride, choose your adventure. Plenty of goons and classic characters appear; the Joker and Harley Quinn, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, the Mad Hatter and so on. Defeat them to unlock them for play in 'free play' mode. The game environments are almost fully interactive- you can smash just about everything to pieces (literally), spraying LEGO 'coins' called studs about. Collect the studs to buy suit upgrades and other spicy bits of comic book joy to enhance your gaming experience. The game makes use of the many bat-suits developed over the years, giving them use in unique ways in each level. You will also have to build things from lego bits that are lying around during the game. It makes for a neat change from many other action-adventure titles, especially if you like LEGOs. Smashing, building, and batarang-ing your way through the game, you will notice some eventual repetetiveness- but the developers do a good job of breaking up the monotony. Experienced or dedicated players will probably finish in an afternoon, but probably will take longer to find the many hidden features in each level. Overall, this was a very fun and unique gaming experience.

Lenore: Noogies

Artist/Author: Roman Dirge
Publisher: SLG (Slave Labor Graphics)
First Edition: July 1999
Format: Paperback

Lenore is a cute, innocent little... well, a little dead girl, created by artist and author Roman Dirge and published by SLG. She lives in a world populated by monsters, freaks and oddities, meeting everything from cuddly hamsters to beastly monsters to talking taxidermy. This book recants the first four issues of the popular original series. In this volume we see Lenore go babysitting (don't give a baby a bag of birdseed), she meets a living hairball, dresses up as little bunny Foo-foo, squeezes a hamster half to death, assists a doomed magician, and she even discovers the secret of the elusive muffin elf. We are also introduced to her ill-fated lover, a stitched up, button-eyed man named Mr. Gosh, who never quite gains Lenore's approval... but he does get stabbed a lot. The series is filled out with other original short strips by Dirge, including The Last Robot and The Boy with his Heart in a Box. Both heartwarming and moderately disturbing, Dirge's creation hits the mark for it's genre, skillfully combining little-girl cuteness and life beyond the grave with a very unique style all its own.

Publisher: Slave Labor Graphics

Started in 1986 by Dan Vado, SLG (Slave Labor Graphics) has published many strange and offbeat titles such as Samurai Penguin by Dan and Mark Buck, the groundbreaking Milk and Cheese by Evan Dorkin, and Roman Dirge's Lenore. The company grew and flourished in the mid-eighties during a period of increased interest in indepent comic book publishers, selling out entire runs of their books to many retailers. While most of their titles are originals, in 2005 SLG partnered with Walt Disney to create comic series based on several popular Disney films including Haunted Mansion, Wonderland, Tron and Gargoyles. Some of SLG's original titles such as Kid Gravity and Little Gloomy have since in turn appeared in Disney Adventures Magazine.
